This database is made possible by an MCubed grant from the University of Michigan, and is intended to provide the public with access to the images from each year’s exhibit in a format that is searchable by artwork title, artist name, or year of the show, among other options. Due to permissions and copyright constraints, as well as the limited number of images from the early years of the PCAP Annual Exhibition, not all of the records will contain an image, but all do provide the fullest extent of information that we have that can legally and ethically be made public. Additionally, images and information from the Exhibition of Art by Incarcerated Youth and the Linkage Project Exhibition are not available prior to 2014.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to locate many of the artists who are no longer in the Michigan Department of Correction (MDOC) system. For these artists, we are not making their identifying information available or the images of their artworks, in order to protect their privacy and rights. For the artists still in the system, in accordance with the wishes of the MDOC, we cannot reveal their last names or their demographic information. As such, some artists will not be identified by their legal name.

All of the images on this website prior to 2008, except for 2003, are derived from 35 mm slides. The slides were digitized at 3000 ppi using a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 with an SF210 attachment, while the born-digital images (2008 onward) were taken with a Canon Rebel XT. Minimal imaging, primarily consisting of cropping, has been performed on the images to create the closest approximation of the original artwork possible. Metadata was supplied by the artwork logs for each show; for the records without an image, the metadata is necessarily minimal, given the lack of knowledge of the content of the artwork. As the show grew, more information about the works was recorded, resulting in a greater amount of metadata for artworks displayed in more recent shows.
